MUMBAI: In a first for Mumbai's suburban section, Prabhadevi station on Western Railway has got an advanced 'electronic interlocking system'. The new installation costing Rs 4.2 crore, is swifter to operate and enhances safety in train running system.The existing route relay interlocking (RRI) system from where train movement is controlled through signalling system had to relocate to make way to extend the length of the platform of Prabhadevi station.Chief public relations officer Ravinder Bhakar said, "Before demolishing the existing RRI building, we had to shift the system to a new place."The relay-based electro mechanical interlocking has been replaced by electronic interlocking. Bhakar said, "Button operation is totally eliminated by replacing operating panel with visual display unit. The signalling gear operation is done with mouse and so slag in operation is completely avoided."Moreover, safety standards of new installation is very high on par with international standards and it has self-diagnostic features."In this System, Interlocking between various signalling gears, track detection and signals is achieved through software as against wired system."
