Cab shortage, jams in south Mumbai likely today

The last time, the drivers partners were off roads from October 22 to November 2 and the strike was called off after state transport minister Diwakar Raote intervened. “We have appealed to maximum drivers to stay on the app platform and ferry commuters on Monday,'' said an official. This will not be tolerated this time,'' he said. Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Amitesh Kumar said adequate deployment of personnel will be put to regulate the traffic movement and the protest will not create any problem.Several Ola and Uber cabs were off roads from Sunday morning, and those plying in some areas were available at as high as two times the usual fares.

Mumbai: Brace for shortage of Ola and Uber cabs on Monday as drivers along with their families will take out a march from Bharat Mata junction in Parel to Vidhan Bhavan Nariman Point , on the first day of the winter session of the legislature.Allaying fears of chaos, aggregator firms said they have got assurance from police brass that there will be zero tolerance to any law and order problem and drivers can ply cabs without fear. “We have appealed to maximum drivers to stay on the app platform and ferry commuters on Monday,'' said an official. Union leader Govind Mohite said, “A majority of driver partners have gone offline voluntarily.. We are gearing up for the huge morcha on the first day of the legislature session.” He said that a final call on strike would be taken on Monday afternoon.Maharashtra Rajya Rashtriya Kamgar Sangh leader Sachin Ahir said the aggregator firms had not called any union leader for talks till Saturday night. The last time, the drivers partners were off roads from October 22 to November 2 and the strike was called off after state transport minister Diwakar Raote intervened. “This time, we want the CM to listen to the drivers' grievances,”' said Ahir, adding that “most drivers are leading a hand-to-mouth existence and many are unable repay the car loans”.A Uber official said, “One of their demands was to link fares to rising fuel prices... we have introduced a national fuel price index, which will ensure that driver earnings are correlated with fuel price hikes.” Ola issued a statement saying, “At Ola, the interests of our driver partners is of paramount importance... We are expecting all our driver partners to ply on the platform, and appeal to them and consumers to not pay attention to any rumours.”
