  • | Tuesday | 20th November, 2018

The state's charity commissioner had earlier made it compulsory for 430 trust-run hospitals in state to use the word 'charitable' in their names. So far, we have not received complaints about big charitable hospitals not implementing rules pertaining to poor patients," Shivkumar Dige, charity commissioner, said. The circular was passed three months ago by the office of charity commissioner of Maharashtra. Of the 73 trust-run hospitals across the city, only eight hospitals, which run mostly on OPD basis, are yet to follow the order. Trust-run hospitals across the state and in 19 districts have added 'charitable' in their names.

The charity commissioner is visiting hospitals in Mumbai and across the state to check on the implementation of the circular that elaborated on the use of the word 'charitable' in their trust or charity-run hospital names. The circular was passed three months ago by the office of charity commissioner of Maharashtra. According to the commissioner, most of the big hospitals have implemented the order. Of the 73 trust-run hospitals across the city, only eight hospitals, which run mostly on OPD basis, are yet to follow the order. While eight small-scale trust-run hospitals in Mumbai, are yet to reply and implement the order, 15 hospitals in the city have replied to the charity commissioner's office saying they are in the process of implementing the order but will require some time. The state's charity commissioner had earlier made it compulsory for 430 trust-run hospitals in state to use the word 'charitable' in their names. This move is meant to help the poor to avail treatment. The swanky appearance of a hospital will not mislead poor patients, who are eligible to get free or low-cost treatment. "After three months of the order, we are now conducting checks to see if the hospitals have actually added 'charitable' in their names and are providing free or affordable treatment to the poor. So far, we have not received complaints about big charitable hospitals not implementing rules pertaining to poor patients," Shivkumar Dige, charity commissioner, said. According to one of the officials from the commissioner's office, they have been writing letters to all the hospitals and asking about updates on implementation every week. Trust-run hospitals across the state and in 19 districts have added 'charitable' in their names. Partial implementation is underway in five districts. The step has been taken keeping in mind how most patients are unaware that charitable hospitals must reserve 10 per cent beds and a part of their funds for needy patients.
