Maharashtra government needs Rs 20K cr more for quota & drought relief

The state government has tabled supplementary demands worth Rs 20,326.45 crore, which includes demands worth Rs 7,200 crore for agriculture and farmer related measures and drought relief. For irrigation corporations and land acquisition for irrigation projects, the government has sought supplementary demand worth Rs 3,000 crore, while it has sought Rs 2,200 crore towards drought relief. It also includes provision of Rs 42 crore for investigating the Bhima Koregaon riots and Rs 26 crore for conducting the ensuing Lok sabha elections. The government, in the past four years, has sought sanctions totaling Rs 1.87700 lakh crores under supplementary demands. The supplementary demands were tabled before the Assembly to seek additional money from the Centre, over and above the annual budget.

The state would be needing another Rs 500 crore for implementing reservation for the Maratha community. The demands were tabled on Monday. For irrigation corporations and land acquisition for irrigation projects, the government has sought supplementary demand worth Rs 3,000 crore, while it has sought Rs 2,200 crore towards drought relief. Criticising the proposal for supplementary demands, Dhananjay Munde, leader of Opposition in state legislative council, said that such a whopping amount for supplementary demands clearly shows that the finance minister is not managing the department well. Munde said the BJP and Shiv Sena have put the state of Maharashtra in a debt trap and the state now has a burden of Rs 4.5 lakh crore loan to be paid off. The supplementary demands were tabled before the Assembly to seek additional money from the Centre, over and above the annual budget. The government, in the past four years, has sought sanctions totaling Rs 1.87700 lakh crores under supplementary demands. Also, the state government had to approach the Assembly to get its nod for supplementary demands 12 times in the past four years. The supplementary demands put before the Assembly on Monday for sanctions include providing Rs 4.5 crore for making a film on the life and work of Mahatma Jotirao Phule, the legendary social reformer. It also includes provision of Rs 42 crore for investigating the Bhima Koregaon riots and Rs 26 crore for conducting the ensuing Lok sabha elections. It was also decided that the state will arrange for a fund of Rs 12 crore for maintenance and repair of 206 martyrs’ memorials in the state. BURDENED Rs 7,200 crore is needed for agriculture and drought relief. The state would need another Rs 500 crore for implementing reservation for the Maratha community.
