Other modes of transport go the extra mile amid BEST workers' stir

On the second day of the ongoing strike by BEST buses, both Western Railway (WR), Central Railway (CR) along with Mumbai Metro and state corporation ran additional services to cater as a substitute of BEST buses that ferries around 30 lakh buses daily. The sole Metro corridor between Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar also saw an increase in ridership due to the same. Further, on Wednesday, Western Railway ran additional 12 services followed by four additional services by Central Railway. In many areas, there were private buses too that ferried citizens on the second day. The app-based aggregators, kaali-peeli cabs and auto rickshaws ran with full strength. Though people complained of overcharging and surge pricing during peak hours on Tuesday. In case of Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro-1 corridor, it runs around 440 trips daily but since past two days, it is operating around 452 trips that mean additional 12 trips. In one four coach Metro train, around 1,500 passengers can travel. While many also took to social media expressing their discomfort due to over-crowding in other modes of transport amid BEST bus strike. However, on Tuesday BEST administration had confidently claimed to run buses on Wednesday but the claim turned out to be a farce as the majority of the drivers and conductors did not report to work on Wednesday with a mere 15 buses running. Taking social media expressing their discomfort over the same, Mahesh Krishnan on Twitter said, "Well you have put additional trains, but forgot to put additional staff. chaos at Andheri for 2 days, coupled with very rude security staff is now providing memorable exp." To which the official Twitter account of Mumbai Metro replied saying, "We apologise for the inconvenience. Our staff has been counselled and requested to assist passengers at all times." Another citizen, Abhijeet Kapshikar, tweeted saying, "Due to the strike called by BEST buses, auto and taxi drivers are overcharging and are also refusing fares, as per their choice."
