Patrick D'Souza's passion to train his students to efficiency for the common admissions test (CAT) made him the master of the competitive exams. Patrick hit a hat trick with a score of 100 percentile in the recently-announced CAT results. In a bid to understand the nitty-gritties of the test to prepare his students accordingly, Patrick has been appearing for CAT since 15 years; he has been securing a 100 percentile for three consecutive years since 2016. Patrick, 42, has been running Quoin Academy for the past 15 years in Thane's Vartaknagar, with his wife, Rochelle to coach CAT candidates. Patrick had never thought of becoming a tutor. But, in the process of helping his mother, Mary, who tutored school students, he developed an interest for academic coaching. "I used to help my mother who took tutions and that's how I got into tutoring," says Patrick. With age, he realised his inclination towards teaching and pursued it as a career. Ever since he started training students for CAT and other management exams, he has appeared for CAT 15 times. "CAT is very different and the pattern changes every year. There are no fixed set of questions unlike other competitive exams," he said. "To understand how to psychologically write the paper, I take these exams every year." In the past 15 years, Patrick has trained over 3,000 management students. He tutors a batch of only 200 students every year. "Most of my students have scored above 99 percentile this year," Patrick said. He himself has scored 100 percentile five times of the 15 times he have appeared for the exam. Speaking about CAT, Patrick says that the exam requires one to be on their toes. "Students are under a lot of pressure and stress. And hence are unable to crack the exam," he said. "One needs to relax and be stress-free to crack this exam. And respond to the questions spontaneously," he says. Though he has never thought of registering himself for a record yet, Patrick plans to reappear this November. "I will decide in September whether to take the exam or not," Patrick said.
