To honour Bharat Ratna Maulana Abul Kalam Azad legacy, a mural of free India's first education minister will be soon coming up at the Nagpada junction in the coming weeks. Like Ghalib's, the 8 feet by 40 feet mural of Azad too will give a glimpse of prominent phases of his life. The mural is part of the Rs 5.2 crore beautification project that will have a garden, 30-seater amphitheatre and national flag of 25 metres. The mural, will be set up below the installation of Indian national flag. A proud Indian, Azad once said,"I am a Musalman and proud of the fact. I am proud of being an Indian. I am part of that indivisib"le unity which is Indian nationality. I am indispensable to this noble edifice. Without me this splendid structure of India is incomplete... I can never surrender this claim." The mural includes the formative years of him being a student, always known in his life for self-educating, the revolutionary papers he used to protest the British Raj, his prison term with other national leaders and his association with Mahatma Gandhi. A special mention is also given to an instance where he addressed from Jama Masjid post partition lashing out at Muslim community for failing him each time he reached out to them to ensure that division of country was avoided. "The work is on in full swing and we hope to complete it in this week. Once we get a date, it will be open to public. This was an initiative of municipal councilor Rais Shaikh," said Nitin Arte, assistant municipal commissioner of E ward (Nagpada-Madanpura-Byculla). Shaikh said, "Maulana Azad played important role in freedom struggle and a road is named after him. But yet people have forgotten his role in freedom struggle. The idea was to revive the area's cultural heritage and know more about him." "If you look back at history, his role has been very important. He faced a lot of humiliation at the hands of Muslim League. He made best efforts to keep India united. After him there was no leader of his stature and people should know about the visionary who came from a Madrassa and went on to be part of establishing first IIT," Farid Khan of Urdu Caravan.
