CR to dismantle 5 Mum foot overbridges by Apr 30

MUMBAI: Central Railway has advanced the demolition time-line for five 'dangerous' foot over bridges (FOB) by two months from the earlier deadline of June 30.The railways have taken this decision upon the recommendation of an audit by experts from IIT-Bombay. The authorities claim none of the structures required ``immediate demolition'', and insisted that the imminent dismantling of FOBs was not triggered by Thursday's CSMT collapse. CR has targeted to complete this task by March 31.On WR, a total of 144 overhead structures, including 115 FOBs and 29 road over bridges (ROBs) have been audited. The railways said that demolition and repair was already in the offing.CR’s chief public relations officer Sunil Udasi said, “Every week, one FOB will be demolished. 2 of South-FOB after an inspection.The staircase will be closed tentatively till March 29 and the ramp, which opens up near flower market, for 90 days between March 17 to June 16.

The dismantling was planned much in advance and tenders were floated before the CST FOB collapse incident.”A senior CR official said, “There are already alternative FOBs in place so the demolition of these structures will not pose much of problem to the commuters.”The FOBs which are be taken up for demolition are at Bhandup Vikhroli , Diva and Kalyan station.On CR, of a total of 299 structures, the audit of 23 including 12 FOBs remains to be done. CR has targeted to complete this task by March 31.On WR, a total of 144 overhead structures, including 115 FOBs and 29 road over bridges (ROBs) have been audited. Based on the recommendation of IIT, Lower Parel has been demolished and eight FOBs will be pulled down in phases on WR by June 30.Meanwhile, WR has also decided to carry out repairs of the stair-case of FOB at Khar station which is the property of BMC. WR’s chief public relations officer Ravinder Bhakar said, “The stair-case will be closed from March 19 to May 18 for repairs and strengthening.”On Saturday, WR partially shut down a ramp near Platform No.1 and staircase of Platform no. 2 of South-FOB after an inspection.The staircase will be closed tentatively till March 29 and the ramp, which opens up near flower market, for 90 days between March 17 to June 16.
