Maharashtra: Familial ties, glamour at centre stage to decide star campaigners

  • | Wednesday | 27th March, 2019

It is a season of political campaigns and to attract the masses, every party is in the need of a star campaigner. Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly and Congress MLA Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil knows well that blood is thicker than water. The party has added actress Naghma and former Indian cricket captain Azharuddin to the list of star campaigners. Clearly, being the spouse of State President Ashok Chavan has some advantage for Amita Chavan, a complete political newbie who finds place in the party's star campaigner list. In some cases, parties are resorting to familial ties while in other situations, it is the crowd-pulling ability of the campaigner.

It is a season of political campaigns and to attract the masses, every party is in the need of a star campaigner. In some cases, parties are resorting to familial ties while in other situations, it is the crowd-pulling ability of the campaigner. Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly and Congress MLA Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil knows well that blood is thicker than water. Radhakrishna has to bear the challenge of dual responsibilities. On one hand, his party is looking forward to him campaigning in the state to improve the battered situation and on the other hand, he has to convince his local constituency voters in the district of Ahmednagar to vote for his son Sujay Vikhe Patil, who recently crossed over to BJP. It is indeed a heavy cross to bear for Mr Patil. Hence, Radhakrishna is named as the star campaigner in the Congress list but his extended responsibilities also include exhorting voters of Ahmednagar parliamentary constituency to vote for his son. Clearly, being the spouse of State President Ashok Chavan has some advantage for Amita Chavan, a complete political newbie who finds place in the party's star campaigner list. Leaders like the state youth Congress Chief Satyajeet Tambe are startled to see their names missing from the list. Meanwhile, ally Nationalist Congress Party(NCP) seems to be more impressed with the 'reel' Shivaji than his 'real' descendants. Hence, actor Amol Kolhe, who plays Shivaji Maharaj and his son Chhatrapati Sambhaji is in the list of star campaigners while the King's 13th descendant and sitting party MP Shrimant Udayanraje Bhosale's name doesn't find a mention. Congress is also equally drawn to glamour while campaigning in Mumbai and Maharashtra. The party has added actress Naghma and former Indian cricket captain Azharuddin to the list of star campaigners. Urmila Matondkar's name continued to do the rounds to contest in North Mumbai against the formidable sitting MP from BJP Gopal Shetty.
