LS: No. of women voters rises steadily in Maha

Raigad has 8.34 lakh women voters compared to 8.03 lakh men voters, and Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg has 7.35 lakh compared to 7.05 lakh. Women account for nearly 4.2 crore of the state’s 8.7 crore voters.In two important constituencies, Raigad and Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg, women now outnumber men by about 30,000. During the period, the number of male voters has gone up four times. MUMBAI: Women formed just 35% of Maharashtra’s voters in 1952, but their strength has gone up seven times since then to constitute 48% of the state’s electorate for the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. Women’s turnout in the 2009 polls was 47.39%, which rose to 57.98% in 2014.

One of the reasons for this is migration of men from these areas to Mumbai region for work, officials say.“Women are also coming out and voting in increasing numbers,” says state chief electoral officer Ashwani Kumar. Women’s turnout in the 2009 polls was 47.39%, which rose to 57.98% in 2014. The 6.28% difference with men’s turnout in 2009 reduced to 4.26% in 2014.
