A day after DNA launched (Un)fare campaign against errant auto drivers, the commuters have reached out to the paper with complaints against auto-drivers refusing to ply quoting different reasons. DNA promptly reached out to the traffic authorities with the commuter's plaint. Rushabh Mehta, 26 WhatsApp DNA an image in the morning on the Mumbai Ka DNA handle to inform how an auto driver refused to ply him to Borivali station stating that he will get no return commuters from there. "I was waiting for an auto from Borivali link road to go to Borivali station. When I stopped this auto the driver simply refused saying that he will not get passengers from Borivali station and zoomed past me. I clicked a picture of his number plate. I face this problem everyday. I have to wait for a long time to convince a rickshaw driver to take me to the station." Rushabh is a lawyer who works in Dadar and finds it difficult to reach the station from Borivali Link road and has complained that he often reaches office late because of this perpetual refusal from auto drivers. The problem is not limited to only Borivali but to many other suburban commuters. The excuses that they peddle to do so are varied and colorful. The most frequent is that they have return empty handed, the distance is too short, they are short of fuel or they are headed in the opposite direction. This problem is chronic in some spots in Borivali station, Santacruz east and Andheri revealed police sources. DNA reached out to the Traffic police about the problem. The reply ranged between denial of the problem to a promise of an action. "I haven't come across any issue at Borivali Station however if this illegal practice exists I will send my police and the RTO traffic squad to resolve it. Refusing to ply commuters is illegal and the driver cannot deny any commuter," clarified Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Traffic Sandeep Bhajibhakare. "We send our squad in such places where this problem is chronic in civil dress and when any such malpractice is observed a strict chalan is issued against the rickshaw drivers. People can also complain on our WhatsApp number or our control room directly. People can also reach out to the traffic police on ground directly and seek help. RTO has issued hefty chalans on such issues in the past. "
