Officers of unit-2 of the city's crime branch on Saturday conducted a raid at the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC), which runs the Mahalaxmi Racecourse, and arrested 10 people for running an illegal horse race betting racket.
The accused have been identified as Chetan Solanki, Iliyas Yusuf Galiyara, Hamjas Daji, Prashant Jogadiya, Paresh Shah, Sandeep Yadav, Sandeep Shirke, Afzalali Shah, Rajesh Agarwal and Mohammed Rehman Shaikh.
As per the complainant, the unit was tipped-off about a few men who involved in a racket at Mahalaxmi Racecourse where the players were placing bets on the Pune-based race which was being monitored from a television screen in Mumbai.
"Purchasing and selling betting tickets in such racing events without paying taxes is a new type of tax evasion seen leads to financial strain.
So far we have arrested 10 people but many other middlemen are yet to be nabbed.
