If you live in Kurla, you have a higher chance of falling ill. Data released by non-governmental organization Praja Foundation has revealed that compared to other wards in the city, Kurla has registered the highest number of TB, diabetes and diarrhea cases. As per data disclosed by public hospitals (government and civic hospitals) data, around new cases of 11,505 diarrhea, 768 tuberculosis, and 1,831 diabetes were reported from Kurla area last year. When contacted BMC's health department, the officials said that they need to go through the data before commenting on the issues. Amey Ghole, chairman of the BMC's health committee, said, "I have asked the Praja Foundation to send me the data. We will analyse and work on the health issues affecting the particular areas." Dr Padmaja Keskar, BMC's executive health officer, the public health department was not available to comment. Sickly Wards While the highest number of hypertension cases (2,025 cases) were reported from D ward, K/East ward tops the list for the most number of dengue cases (205 cases) This year, due to contamination of water, the civic body's public health department has recorded a steep increase in the number of hepatitis cases in Kurla (L ward) compared to other parts of the city. The total number of diarrhea cases has fallen since the past five years across the city. While around 1,15,845 cases were reported in 2014, around 95,535 cases were reported in 2018."If we look at the number of questions asked by public health committee councillors, the focus was mainly on infrastructure. Hardly any question was raised on diseases like dengue, diarrhea, or diabetes," said Milind Mhaske, director of Praja Foundation. Besides this, the highest number of hypertension cases (2,025) were reported in D-ward. While K/East ward recorded the highest number of dengue cases (205), F/South ward tops the list for the most number of malaria cases (679). The data released further stated that on an average 15 people died of TB (5449 in the year 2017), while 26 died of diabetes (9,525 in 2017) every day in the city.
