Mumbai: Heavy rainfall and flood increased leptospirosis cases in September

According to the BMC's public health department monsoon report, more number of malaria, leptospirosis cases are reported in the month of September this year in comparison to last year. Around 666 malaria cases and 55 leptospirosis cases were reported in September this year. As per the report, two deaths due to leptospirosis were reported in the second and third week of the month. Last year, 625 malaria cases and 27 leptospirosis cases were reported in September. Besides leptospirosis and malaria, other monsoon illness reported included - nine cases of H1N1, 425 cases of gastro, 105 caes of hepatitis and 233 cases of dengue.

Two people died due to leptospirosis in the month of September this year. Around 666 malaria cases and 55 leptospirosis cases were reported in September this year. As per the report, two deaths due to leptospirosis were reported in the second and third week of the month. A 61-year-old was declared death on September 7 and 43-year-old resident was declared death on September 18. Last year, 625 malaria cases and 27 leptospirosis cases were reported in September. Both patients had history of walking in the flooded water. Both showed symptoms of bodyache, headache, fever and nausea. The report further stated that the 61-year-old taxi driver missed taking chemoprophylaxis round of MCGM and was later admitted to civic-run hospital with complain of breathlessness. In case of 43-year-old, he too took primary medical treatment at local clinic and was later admitted to civic-run hospital for breathlessness. Patient's condition later deteriorated. As the monsoon continues to lash Dr Padmaja Keskar gives advises to see a doctor if one has waded through flood water. "Consult a doctor for prophylactic treatment of leptospirosis within 72 hours. The private practitioners in the city are requested to prescribe doxycycline to all fever patients during the monsoon season as a preventive treatment. People should keep the surrounding clean and avoid indiscriminate disposal of garbage which may attract rodents and stray dogs which are the main reservoirs of leptospirosis." Besides leptospirosis and malaria, other monsoon illness reported included - nine cases of H1N1, 425 cases of gastro, 105 caes of hepatitis and 233 cases of dengue. Around 3527 dengue like illness were admitted in September. H1N1 outbreak is reported every alternate year. This year the number cases are less as compared to 33 cases in 2018. See A Doctor
