CHANDIGARH: Thursday was final day of counselling for admission to Bachelor in Engineering (BE) and Bachelor in Architecture (BArch) courses under six Punjab University affiliated engineering colleges. The counselling session was only for those students who did not belong to general, scheduled caste (SC), scheduled tribe (ST) and sports category. Close to 692 students gathered at PU`s Gymnasium Hall for centralized document verification.

Seven counters and 30 teachers were appointed along with security personnel and non-teaching staff to handle the rush of students and parents. Defence category student Nimit Khurana, who aspires to secure admission to UIET, said "Counselling was well-planned and the actual process of document verification only took 15 minutes." However, several parents were not pleased with the arrangement as they had to wait for more than 3 hours to get things done.

"Document verification takes time as we can`t afford to overlook even a minor detail as it would cause injustice to admission seekers. In the end, we are working for the convenience and advantage of students," informed UICET chairperson U S Shivhare. More than 9,000 online applications were received this year for all the courses.

"Considering the good demand of the course, we have also increased the number of seats by 5% in our department," Shivhare added. On Friday, a final list of eligible candidates belonging to reserved category, except sports and defence, would be displayed for filling of choices. Thereafter, on July 19 and 20, trials of students from sports category would be held.

On the same day, first round of seat allotment (except sports and defence category) would also take place. The second round of seat allotment is expected to on July 26..
