As first-time voters in the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, college students in the city have started a digital media campaign 'Vote For Mumbai' in order to create awareness among citizens. As the students themselves are first-time voters, they did a lot of research before campaigning and are dishing out facts in a unique way. The students conduct a door-to-door campaign asking voters to make a difference and vote for a better future. A group of over 20 students are doing their bit to make sure citizens turn up in high numbers to vote on February 21. Everyone complains about the issues faced but looking at the last election results, barely 45 per cent of voters actually voted."

As first-time voters in the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, college students in the city have started a digital media campaign 'Vote For Mumbai' in order to create awareness among citizens. A group of over 20 students are doing their bit to make sure citizens turn up in high numbers to vote on February 21. The initiative was started by five students, 10 days ago and eventually drew attention from other colleges. The students conduct a door-to-door campaign asking voters to make a difference and vote for a better future. As the students themselves are first-time voters, they did a lot of research before campaigning and are dishing out facts in a unique way. The students are from different city colleges including Jai Hind, KC, Government Law College, Swami Vivekanand, Mithibai and HR college to name a few. Speaking about the initiative, 21-year-old Shubham Rane, student of Jai Hind college, said, "Social media is the best platform to reach out to first-time voters since most of them have social media accounts. Through this initiative, we are targeting all age groups and distributing posters in different colleges and public spaces. While working on the project we came to know that many voters don't have access to basic details about parties and their candidates. Everyone complains about the issues faced but looking at the last election results, barely 45 per cent of voters actually voted." The campaign has generated likes from over 19,000 citizens on their Facebook page. The students have already released four videos shot by them and soon will be releasing more videos on different topics related to the elections. According to students, besides attending lectures, they have been working on this initiative for more than three hours a day. Lishu Singhvi, another student from Jai Hind College, said, "We have been speaking to people from different age groups and background. In the first four videos we chose to highlight issues like why voter id card is important, what are the issues faced by locals on a daily basis, what do citizens think about the voter turnout and how many people know about the election dates. We will be highlighting more issues through short videos, Facebook posts and posters before the elections to spread awareness," Singhvi added.
