Pay Rs 3 more for a litre of petrol now as VAT hiked

MUMBAI: From Saturday, you will have to pay Rs 3 more per litre of petrol. Thus, a litre will not cost cost Rs 77.45, the Petrol Dealers' Association confirmed. The state government increased the value-added tax on a litre by that amount from Friday midnight. The Rs 9 is collected as a contribution towards the well-being of drought-affected farmers.Even though prices have been fluctuating, on an average the rise in petrol price over the year comes to Rs 7-8, said dealers. Interestingly, out of 235 petrol pumps in the city, 223 have decided take a weekly off every Sunday, from May 14.

There was no rise on VAT for diesel , which is 21%+Rs 2 for the rest of the state and 24%+Rs 2 for Mumbai metropolitan region.The tax of 26%+Rs 6 has been restructured by increasing it to 26%+Rs 9, the copy of gazette notification dated April 21 stated.It will be 26%+Rs 9 per litre for Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane city, whereas 25%+Rs 9 per litre is for the rest of Maharashtra, a dealer said. The Rs 9 is collected as a contribution towards the well-being of drought-affected farmers.Even though prices have been fluctuating, on an average the rise in petrol price over the year comes to Rs 7-8, said dealers. Interestingly, out of 235 petrol pumps in the city, 223 have decided take a weekly off every Sunday, from May 14. Dealers said this Rs 3 rise will not fluctuate and won't make up any margin for them.Consumers wondered what would be done for ambulances and the fire brigade in an emergency on Sundays.
