Following orders of the Mumbai High Court, the corporation has started demolishing the slums around the pipelines for the past couple of days. Sena’s Mangesh Satamkar, who moved the adjournment motion, said that an estimated 1,500 slums have been razed, and over 1,850 slums along Sion-Koliwada are awaiting demolitions. A few months ago, the Sena had got the general body meeting adjourned over the same issue. “Despite adjourning the House, the civic administration has failed to heed to our demands. The residents have no issues in shifting to Mahul, where the BMC is rehabilitating them. The problem is Mahul has no basic amenities like drinking water, health, transport, and drainage lines,” Mr. Satamkar said. “People who have been living near the pipelines for three to four decades cannot shift in the middle of academic year affecting the education of their children,” he said. Leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Manoj Kotak supported the move, and said that his party had sought ?300 crore towards their rehabilitation in the recent budget. The Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party too extended their support. Many said that the BMC could have presented the issue in court to get justice to the affected.
