MYSURU: The University of Mysore Academic Council on Tuesday decided to withdraw degree certificates issued to 21 students who were found involved in malpractices to secure fake marks cards and degree certificates.It also decided to take action against the employees who are involved in the irregularities.The university authorities had alleged that 23 students, who had completed various undergraduate courses during 2001-08, had involved in malpractice with some university employees and middlemen to secure fake marks cards and degree certificates.After an inquiry, the varsity authorities found the students guilty and decided to withdraw the marks cards and degree certificates. Challenging the university’s decision, the students approached the high court, which directed the varsity to conduct a fresh inquiry into the case.The Academic Council meeting headed by in-charge VC T K Umesh on Tuesday discussed that the 23 students, who were involved in the marks card scandal, did not surrender their original marks cards to the university, and moved the high court for relief.The university later conducted an inquiry by appointing retired district judge R Venkatesh as the inquiry officer. After the probe, the charges were proved against the students. Meanwhile, two students died during the course of the inquiry. So the council decided to withdraw the degrees awarded to students under Section 70 of Karnataka State University Act (2000).University registrar R Rajanna said that action will be initiated against employees who are involved in irregularities.Colleges fail to follow rosterDuring the discussion on whether to continue the affiliation to colleges which have failed to adhere to the university norms, council member C Basavaraju said many colleges have faulted on this.“Many affiliated colleges do not have permanent principals and mandated their qualification as per UGC directions. Majority of them does not follow the roster in appointing the principals. We should take stringent action against such colleges by cancelling the affiliation. Sharada Vilas Institutions has not followed the roster despite repeated directions from the university. Only rigorous action will make them follow suit,” Basavaraju claimed.University in-charge VC Umesh said that he will speak to the government to fill the vacant posts of principals.Later, the council members felicitated BJP leader and MLC Ramachandra Gowda, whose term will end on June 21. MLC Appaji Gowda and others were present.
