MYSURU: Pregnant women and new mothers sleeping on the corridor floor on makeshift beds at Cheluvamba Hospital is nothing new. It was the sight that greeted Chamaraja constituency MLA Nagendra on Tuesday when he visited the hospital. Appalled, the legislator has suggested measures to improve the situation.During his visit to the hospital which lasted nearly an hour, he was apprised of the various problems faced by doctors, nurses and patients. He found many of the patients, especially pregnant women, sleeping on the floor due to shortage of beds. RMO Gangamma briefed Nagendra on the prevailing condition in the hospital and steps being taken to improve the situation.Speaking to TOI Nagendra said, “There is a shortage of beds in the hospital. I will convene a meeting with the authorities and write a letter to the health minister and urge them to address the issue. I found many women who have just delivered sleeping on the floor with their newborns. I have instructed the staff to take necessary steps to ensure beds for all patients as the chances of them getting infection is high during the monsoon,” said the MLA. The hospital has been directed to buy 100 cots to meet the shortage of beds. The bathroom in ward 4 which is in a pathetic condition for the last two months was also brought to his notice. “I have told them to set it right. Apart from this the treatment in the hospital is good,” he added.To cater to the present demands the hospitals needs almost double the sanctioned posts which were sanctioned three to four decades back when the hospital saw very few patients. Today an average 250 patients from neighbouring districts visit the hospital.
