MYSURU: Trouble seems to be not over for people living in low-lying areas of Kapila and Cauvery rivers in Mysuru. Heavy rains coupled with flash floods have brought miseries to residents in three taluks of Mysuru district The worst affected are DB Kuppe residents as flood water has entered their dwelling areas forcing them to move to safer places. Nearly 23 families have been asked to leave their homes following rains in Antharasanthe hobli in Heggadadevana Kote taluk Thashildar R Manjunath said they have opened ‘Ganji Kendra’ (relief camp) to extend help to families dislodged by floods and heavy rains. Fire and Emergency Service personnel are stationed as precaution as there is forecast of rains in catchment areas of Kapila River, a tributary of the River Cauvery.Meanwhile, officials of Nanjangud are likely to shut National Highway 766 for traffic as flood waters from Kapila have partially submerged one side of the road. Traffic is being monitored near Mallanamoole Mutt near Nanjangud. Thasildhar M Dayanand says the outflow from Kapila had touched 70000 cusecs on Thursday and it is expected to increase overnight. Since there is rain in Waynad, Kerala, the catchment area of Kapila we are continuously in touch with authorities in the neighbouring state.Officials of T Narasipura continued to monitor water level at Hemmige Bridge near Talakadu as overflowing Cauvery River had completely submerged the bridge. This is for the first time in its history of 33 years water is overflowing the bridge.The floods had cut off the bridge inconveniencing residents of 30 villages in the taluk. They now have to make a detour of additional 15 kms to reach T Narasipura town.Rajesh, a local resident, claimed this for the first time water level has risen to this level. Though there were floods in early 1990s water hadn’t overflowed the bridge. Thasildar K Raju said vehicle movement has been restricted and the bridge is being guarded by cops round the clock. Meanwhile, few more families in Malangi living close to the stream have been relocated following heavy outflow.Foundation stone for the bridge was laid by former CM Ramakrishna Hegde in 1984.The total outflow of Cauvery River at Triveni Sangama, the confluence of three rivers – Kapila, Cauvery and Spatika, the invisible river, at T Narasipura was close to 2 lakh cusecs. The outflow from KRS dam was close to 1.3 lakh cusecs while from Kapila Reservoir it was nearly 70000 cusecs on Thursday.Heavy outflow had covered 34 stair-steps of total 38 at the Sangama. Even officials of Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Company were closely monitoring the level as water was touched sagging 11 KV high tension wire at Sangama.
