Mysuru: Bagging the third spot in the Swachh Survekshan rankings, has far from leaving the officials of the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) disappointed, has only made them more determined to settle for nothing less than the top spot next year. “We are also trying to promote alternatives to plastic, and have decided to set up a ‘Green Shop’ in all the nine zones under MCC. “After the Lok Sabha elections, in three batches, all corporators will visit Indore, which clinched the title of the cleanest city in India,” said Pushpalatha. Mysuru: Bagging the third spot in the Swachh Survekshan rankings, has far from leaving the officials of the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) disappointed, has only made them more determined to settle for nothing less than the top spot next year. MCC commissioner Shilpa Nag said that, besides the many schemes and programmes announced by the council in its budget for the 2019-20 financial year, the civic agency was contemplating rolling out other initiatives such as ‘Green Weddings’ and setting up onsite compost units at apartment complexes that generate more than 100kg of garbage on a daily basis to further improve the city’s solid waste management programme.Elaborating on the amount of energy that could be conserved through ‘Green Weddings’, a concept that had already become popular in many other cities, Shilpa said, “From printing invitation cards to food, a massive amount of plastic is used. Besides, most weddings leave a large amount of leftover food. Use of plastic bottles, covers and the amount of fuel burnt to distribute invitations , all of these exercises can be done away with as part of the initiatives. If family members approach us, we can certainly tell them what a ‘Green Wedding’ entails.”Shilpa added that apartment complexes that generated more than 100kg of garbage daily had been given one month to install a compost unit, failing which the owner would be levied a hefty fine. “We are also trying to promote alternatives to plastic, and have decided to set up a ‘Green Shop’ in all the nine zones under MCC. We have also established a bottle-compresser unit to better recycle water bottles. Before the survey for Swachh Survekshan begins for the 2020 rankings, we will establish model parks in every ward,” said Shilpa, adding that the MCC would try to expedite the process to set up a construction waste demolition unit, the proposal for which was awaiting a nod from the state government.Meanwhile, mayor Pushpalatha Jagannath expressed her gratitude to the citizens of the city, MCC officials, pourakarmikas, corporators, NGOs and the many brand ambassadors for helping Mysuru improve its ranking. “After the Lok Sabha elections, in three batches, all corporators will visit Indore, which clinched the title of the cleanest city in India,” said Pushpalatha.
