Interdisciplinary knowledge a must to crack competitive exams, says VC

Mysuru: Emphasising the need for interdisciplinary knowledge in cracking competitive examinations , Gulbarga University vice-chancellor SR Niranjana on Wednesday said, “Without interdisciplinary knowledge, one cannot pass any competitive exams . Stiff competition has resulted in all competitive examinations becoming very difficult. To do well, you need to possess minimum knowledge in all subjects. “Good policymakers and administrators are the need of the hour,” said the Gulbarga University VC.UoM registrar Lingaraja Gandhi, meanwhile, lamented the lack of employability of a bulk of graduates. “Among those who graduate every year across Karnataka, 85% are not fit to be employed at industries.

Also, we need to acknowledge the importance of digital infrastructure, alongside that of its physical counterpart.”The Gulbarga University VC, who inaugurated a two-day workshop on ‘Successfully Facing Competitive Examinations’ organised by the special cell for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, and directorate of student welfare at University of Mysore (UoM) at Senate Bhavan in Manasagangothri campus, said, “If you confine study to any particular subject, you are bound to find it difficult to pass competitive examinations. To do well, you need to possess minimum knowledge in all subjects. In order to help students perform well in these examinations, the university library needs to have all the necessary facilities, including copies of previous question papers, latest gadgets and books that help one crack competitive exams.”Niranjana rued the decline in the quality of education in Karnataka, despite the state boasting as many as 57 universities, among which 27 were run by the state. “One of the reasons is the lack of teachers in many of these varsities. Also, many universities lack the basic infrastructure to pursue higher education including MS, MBA, et al. Hence, there is a need to conduct competitive examinations such as Karnataka Administrative Service KAS ) and Indian Administrative Service IAS ) on time so students can hope to get good jobs,” said Niranjana.At a time when the debate around global warming has reached alarming levels, and questions being asked about the possibility of the world staring at food and water shortage, Niranjana said that the rapid pace at which technology was growing India did not have to worry about food for another 100 years. “Good policymakers and administrators are the need of the hour,” said the Gulbarga University VC.UoM registrar Lingaraja Gandhi, meanwhile, lamented the lack of employability of a bulk of graduates. “Among those who graduate every year across Karnataka, 85% are not fit to be employed at industries. Even 75% of the engineers are not fit to be employed. Stiff competition has resulted in all competitive examinations becoming very difficult. There is no shortcut to success, nor is there any substitute to hard work,” said Gandhi.Professor A Balasubramanian of the department of studies at University of Mysore (UoM) said that the intention of the workshop was to ensure 10,000 appointments for the varsity students through competitive examinations.A wide range of subjects will be discussed at the two-day workshop: Indian Constitution, current affairs, methods of preparation for competitive examinations, etc. A large number of students have registered for the workshop.
