Mysuru: The carcasses of a tigress and a tusker were found in two separate places in Kodagu district on Monday. Prima facia, poaching is ruled out in both cases.According to officials, an eight-year-old tigress was found dead in Kuntur range in Nagarhole tiger reserve in Kodagu. The authorities suspect that it died after a ferocious fight with another tiger. “It is evident from the broken skull due to canine bite at three places,” said K M Narayana Swamy, field director, Nagarhole national park.“This death is not related to poaching,” he clarified. According to the authorities, last week, another tiger was found dead in the same location. “We came to know about the tiger death on Sunday evening and immediately rushed to the spot,” he said.In the second incident, a 12-year-old tusker was found dead in Kalathmadu of Kalathmadu-Hosakote range. It seems the elephant had drowned in a pond inside a coffee plantation.According to the forest authorities, the plantation labourers who saw the tusker’s carcass, alerted them. Immediately, senior officers rushed to the spot and the carcass was taken out from the pond.Speaking to TOI, forest department veterinarian Dr Mujeeb said that as per the post-mortem report, the primary cause for death is drowning. “The body was filled with pond water. The body position also suggested the same,” he said.“We used metal detectors to find whether the elephant has any bullet injuries. But nothing was traced in the metal detector. So, the possibility of firing at the elephant is ruled out,” he said.He also explained that the tusker would have died nearly four days ago. “We had received information on Sunday that an elephant is in the locality. But today we found its body,” he said.
