Engineering graduate to work as warder in Ballari jail

MYSURU: Engineering graduate Santhosh Kalasannavar will commence his career as a warder at Ballari jail Perhaps he is the first BE graduate to take up a lower-rung job in the department of prisons. Warders stand a chance to get promoted as head warder, chief warder and jailer. He will be posted in Ballari.Speaking to TOI after participating in the parade, Santhosh, said that he, in line with his family's wishes, always aspired to join police service. He got selected as a warder thorough direct recruitment last year. A warder can rise up to the level of assistant superintendent of prisons before retirement.The event was attended by DGP (prisons) H N Sathyanarayana Rao and ADGP G Veerabhadra Swamy.

Santhosh, 22, seemed happy after completing basic training in Mysuru — he was among 61 warders who took part in the passing-out parade that marked the end of their year long training programme.The parade was held at Mysuru Central Prisons on Friday.The prerequisite to become a warder is SSLC. But almost all of those who were selected for the job are over-qualified — 34 are graduates, 6 BEd holders, 10 DEd holders and five diploma holders.Santhosh, a native of Belagavi district, has done engineering in biotechnology and worked as Java developer in a private firm before choosing a career in the department of prisons. He got selected as a warder thorough direct recruitment last year. He will be posted in Ballari.Speaking to TOI after participating in the parade, Santhosh, said that he, in line with his family's wishes, always aspired to join police service. "I'm glad that I fulfilled the wish of my parents - businessman Sathyappa Kalasannavar and homemaker Sunganda," said Santhosh, who has two sisters.Warder is the lowest-rung officer in the department, and the job calls for keeping vigil within the confines, including cells. Warders stand a chance to get promoted as head warder, chief warder and jailer. A warder can rise up to the level of assistant superintendent of prisons before retirement.The event was attended by DGP (prisons) H N Sathyanarayana Rao and ADGP G Veerabhadra Swamy.
