Minor girl refuses to marry despite parental pressure

Mysuru: After standing up to her family, and society, by refusing to marry, a 15-year-old girl from Mysuru district has now sought help from the women and child department.The wedding ceremony of the minor girl was scheduled to be held on November 23 at a convention hall at T Narasipura.However, timely intervention by the District Child Protection Officer (DCPO), child rights' activists and cops ensured that the wedding was called off.A volunteer from the child helpline said that the minor girl was under pressure from her family to marry her maternal uncle. The girl's parents had fixed the date of the wedding. Despite her parents' protestations, the girl remained firm in her decision to oppose the marriage pointing out that she was underage.However, with her parents refusing to relent, the girl was left with no other option but to leave her home. On Monday, she left home and arrived at Nanjangud , and with no food and place to spend the night, decided to spend the night at the Srikanteshwara temple.On Tuesday, she approached the department of women and child development office on Hullahalli Road and explained her ordeal to the authorities, and sought help to stop her marriage.Nanjangud DCPO Geetha Lakshmi told TOI, "We have recorded the statement of the minor girl and shifted her to a girls' home in Siddarthanagar in Mysuru. We will present the report at the Child Welfare Committee meeting."Meanwhile, officials from the department have traced the parents of the minor girl and have asked them to give statements.
