Dalit organisations carry out rally in city centre despite police directive

Mysuru: Although City police denied permission to the Samvidhana Surakshana Samithi, and dalit organisations to hold a Mysuru bandh - these fora have been protesting for a case to be registered against former MLC and BJP leader G Madhusudhan, alleging that he insulted the Indian Constitution - members of these organisations proceeded to hold a rally in the centre of the city, forcing many shops and commercial establishments to down their shutters on Wednesday.Members of various organisations converged in front of Town Hall, and raised slogans against Madhusudhan. The protesters subsequently proceeded to JLB Road, Ramaswamy Circle, RTO Circle, before the rally came to an end at the deputy commissioner's office.Demanding that Madhsudhan be arrested for passing, what they alleged were insulting remarks against both the Constitution and its chief architect BR Ambedkar , the protesters initially waited for DC D Randeep to arrive at the office so that they could submit a memorandum to him. The protesters waited at the DC's office for nearly half an hour, but when he did not arrive, they proceeded to Hunsur Road where they staged a dharna, where traffic movement was disrupted for nearly an hour.When he learnt that a dharna was being staged on Hunsur Road, Randeep rushed to the spot, and heard the protesters' grievance. Urilinga Peddi Math seer Jnana Prakash alleged that police had refused to file an FIR against Madhusudhan.Randeep assured the agitators that he would consult the district in-charge minister on the issue and take necessary action in a week. After he requested the protesters not to block vehicular movement, did they withdraw the agitation.Congress corporator from Subbarayanakere ward P Prasanth registered a complaint with City police commissioner AS Rao against a few protesters, who allegedly tried to attack him on D Devaraja Urs Road. Prasanth told TOI, "I was walking along Devaraja Urs Road, when the protesters arrived on Devaraja Urs Road and forced many shops to close.""The City police commissioner had given strict instructions that no shops or educational institutions should be closed forcibly. But I heard the protesters abuse the shopowners, and forcing them to down the shutters. I was near the masjid on Devaraja Urs Road, and was talking to policemen who were deployed there for security, when a few youngsters who were participating in the rally started hurling abuse at shopowners. Some women, who worked at the shop, were afraid and started running. When I interfered and asked them to stop, they got angry and started abusing me in filthy language; some even tried to attack me," added Prasanth.Although the corporator assured the youngsters that he supported their protest, Prasanth said they were not in a mood to heed his plea.However, cops who were on the spot, managed to bring the situation under control. However, Prasanth has decided to lodge a complaint with the City police commissioner.
