Nagpur: Energy minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule has given MSEDCL two years’ time to reduce distribution losses in Akola, Aurangabad, Jalgaon, Jalna and Beed to 15% else franchisees will be appointed for these cities. The power unions had sought some time to reduce the losses.Citing the success of Bhiwandi, Bawankule approved power distribution franchisees for Malegaon and Mumbra-Kalwa areas. According to him, the distribution losses in the two areas had touched an alarming 55%.Replying to a query during a press conference held in the city on Saturday, the minister said that the base rate in Malegaon and Mumbra-Kalwa tenders was the best in the country. “BJP did not have problems with franchisee system per se during Congress-NCP rule but with the base rate. All the lacunae in the earlier tenders have been removed,” he added. The minister praised MSEDCL for handling the summer demand without resorting to load shedding. “This year, the demand reached 23,700MW, the highest ever. However, we met it without load shedding of a single MW. Due to poor rainfall in 2017, the water in feeder reservoirs was less. The coal stock in many power stations was not satisfactory. Still, we managed to cater to the summer demand,” he said.Commenting on ever increasing arrears of the discom, which have touched Rs40,000 crore, Bawankule said, “Most of the amount is owed by consumers whom we can’t disconnect. Farmers owe Rs27,000 crore and the remaining amount by public water works, municipal and gram panchayat street lights, government schools and buildings. If we disconnect them, common people will be put to inconvenience. We have asked the government to make provisions for clearing these bills in monsoon session of the state assembly.”He further said that a private agency would be appointed to rectify the farm pump bills. “We will waive off interest of farmers and ask them to pay the principal in five instalments,” he added.
