NAGPUR: Dr Nilesh Junankar and Dr Pradeep Sharma, surgeons from city and Pune respectively, demonstrated a new and revolutionary technique used to treat piles using a diode laser . According to the surgeons, the technique is totally painless, requires no incision and doesn’t leave any scar. It is basically a day care procedure. The technique was demonstrated at a workshop organized by the Association of Surgeons of India (ASN), Nagpur chapter, recently. It was followed by a continuing medical education (CME) programme. The workshop was attended by 50 surgeons from Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and other cities from across the country.Professors from Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) also attended the programme. Seven patients of piles and fistula were operated. “A patient who was under treatment for piles for the last 10 years also underwent the surgery at the workshop. It is painless, precise and gives good results,” said Dr Junankar. It is the only diode laser machine in the city and Dr Junankar claimed that only he was trained to operate it.Dr Deepa Jahagirdar, associate professor in surgery at GMCH, told TOI that she was very satisfied with the training. “The procedure is very safe and yields very good results if done by an experienced surgeon. The surgery must be customized as per the patient’s needs and the type of the piles mass. To avoid complications, the surgeon must ensure that the piles tissue is delivered only the accurate dose of the laser,” she said.National president of ASN Dr Dilip Gode said he was very impressed by the technique and suggested that all surgeons should learn it.The CME held later in the evening was attended by 150 surgeons. The topics included ‘Laser haemorrhoidoplasty’ by Dr Nilesh Junankar, ‘Pilonidal Sinus. Where do we stand?’ by Dr Pradeep Sharma, and ‘Evidence based practice in fistula surgery’ by Dr Pradeep Sharma.ASN Nagpur president Dr Rajesh Singhania, secretary Dr Sushil Lohiya, Dr Madhukar Thakre and Dr Suhas Kalambe were among the others who attended the workshop and the CME.
