Rifle seized from city youths was stolen from Army man’s house in UP

Nagpur: The rifle and 30 live cartridges seized from three youths on Friday had been stolen from the residence of an Army man at Manjanpur in Kosambi district of Uttar Pradesh (UP). During interrogation, Abhijeet revealed that he stole stealing the firearm, gold and cash from an Army man’s residence at UP. During a search, the 0.315 sporting civilian firearm manufactured at Ishapore Rifle Factory and 30 rounds were found in the car. Abhijeet and his accomplices had also admitted having broken into a number of pan kiosks. The owner of the firearm, Tikam Singh, posted in the engineering wing of the Indian Army at Pathankot, was away with family when the theft had taken place.

Abhijeet Pandey, one of the three arrested, is learnt to have admitted to the police that he stole the firearm on June 23 while he had gone to UP to attend a wedding.A local court has, meanwhile, remanded all the three youths to magisterial custody, rejecting the police custody request from Lakadganj police.Lakadganj police had nabbed Abhijeet, his brother-in-law Jagdish Pandey, and Shadab Khan, after intercepting their car at Prajapati Chowk last week. During a search, the 0.315 sporting civilian firearm manufactured at Ishapore Rifle Factory and 30 rounds were found in the car. The three initially claimed to have purchased the firearm from UP for Rs10,000. During interrogation, Abhijeet revealed that he stole stealing the firearm, gold and cash from an Army man’s residence at UP. He claims to have been with another brother-in-law Rohit while breaking into the Army man’s house.The police had established contact with their UP counterparts, who informed them that an offence was already registered at Manjanpur police station for the theft of the rifle. The owner of the firearm, Tikam Singh, posted in the engineering wing of the Indian Army at Pathankot, was away with family when the theft had taken place. Senior PI of Manjanpur police station Ajit Kumar Pandey reached Lakadganj on Sunday along with the complainant.The UP police team is now faced with a hurdle since the court did not grant remand custody to Lakadganj police after Abhijeet and two others were produced before it on Saturday. The three were sent to jail. The UP police team is now contemplating approaching the court to procure production warrant for Abhijeet, to take him out of jail to probe his offences in their state.Apart from the firearm, Lakadganj police team of PSI Rahul Gadekar under PI Santosh Khandekar also had detected a number of truck battery thefts at Umred, Butibori, and Mouda. Abhijeet and his accomplices had also admitted having broken into a number of pan kiosks.
