Govt letter surfaces, saves NU from fresh trouble

NU officials claim that the letter arrived by post and was received only on September 15. Students have again questioned the move to provide just seven days when it was actually the NU which was at fault. Around 50 students and activists of National Students Union of India (NSUI) spent the entire night on the NU main building premises. The State Board and the department took the decision to save students from losing an academic year.

Nagpur: Even as four more protests over admission denial to backlog students rocked the Nagpur University (NU) on Monday, a letter dated September 5 issued by the department of higher education, Pune, came to the rescue of vice-chancellor SP Kane, who seemed to be clueless about the government order. The NU has now decided to extend the admission cut off till September 25.Kane’s ignorance about the letter has raised questions over his administration. NU officials claim that the letter arrived by post and was received only on September 15. In that case too, why it wasn’t brought to the VC’s notice is questionable as Kane was hounded by four protests by different youth wings of political parties on Saturday itself. Around 50 students and activists of National Students Union of India (NSUI) spent the entire night on the NU main building premises. The incident has left the Kane administration red-faced.VC Kane didn’t’ answer to TOI’s calls.In his letter to all non-agriculture university registrars, director of higher education, Dhanraj Mane, had directed to admit HSC students who passed in supplementary exam in August. The State Board and the department took the decision to save students from losing an academic year. The NU has decided to utilize the order to extend the deadline for others too.On September 9, TOI was the first to report that NU was unfair in denying admission to students who cleared their backlog papers in revaluation. A large number of students from BE, BA, BSc, BCom, BSW etc had been knocking on the NU doorsteps to extend the deadline.The NU had set September 6 as final cut off for all types of admissions . Therefore, the department had shot off a letter a day in advance.Parents had asked why the university didn’t take lesson from the board when it came to protecting students’ interest.On Monday, different youth wings along with the aggrieved students had reached the university demanding implementation of the department’s order by producing the copy of Mane’s letter.The VC has assured them to issue a notification on Tuesday and extend the deadline till September 25. Students have again questioned the move to provide just seven days when it was actually the NU which was at fault.
