Kalidas Samaroh to feature top women artistes

Nagpur: A prestigious cultural event of the region, Kalidas Samaroh this year will be held in the city from November 27 to 29 and will feature renowned women artistes from the field of vocal, instrumental music and classical dance. The renowned instrumentalist of Hindustani classical music, Shankar plays the gayaki ang of violin. She has given performances across the world and was awarded Padma Shree in 2009.The second performance will be of Kaushiki Chakraborty, daughter of classical music maestro Pt Ajoy Chakraborty. The festival will conclude with a classical vocal performance by veteran singer Begum Parveen Sultana of Patiala gharana.Kalidas Samaroh is organized by MTDC in collaboration with the district administration. The programmes will begin at 6.30pm.Giving details of the event, divisional commissioner Sanjay Kumar told media on Thursday that this year the theme of the festival will be ‘Voice of Indian Women’.

The programmes will begin at 6.30pm.Giving details of the event, divisional commissioner Sanjay Kumar told media on Thursday that this year the theme of the festival will be ‘Voice of Indian Women’. “We have invited only women artistes to perform in the festival in keeping with the theme,” he said.To be held at Suresh Bhat auditorium, which has a seating capacity of more than 2,000, the festival this year will start with the performance of Mangalacharan by a local dance group headed by Shrimathi Madkholkar. This will be followed by a percussion performance by tabla virtuoso Anuradha Pal.A disciple of Ustad Allah Rakha and Ustad Zakir Hussain, Pal is known as the first professional woman tabla player in the world. The third performance of the day will be by renowned Hindustani classical vocalist Arti Anklikar Tikekar, a disciple of Agra, Gwalior and Jaipur-Atruali gharana.On November 28, the evening will open with a Bharatanatyam performance by Devyani, a native of France, who has mastered the form and has been learning since the age of 10. She has given performances across the world and was awarded Padma Shree in 2009.The second performance will be of Kaushiki Chakraborty, daughter of classical music maestro Pt Ajoy Chakraborty. Known for her mastery over khayal and thumri, Kaushiki has been a disciple of Patiala gharana.The final day performances on November 29 will have violinist Sangeeta Shankar take the stage for the opening act. The renowned instrumentalist of Hindustani classical music, Shankar plays the gayaki ang of violin. The festival will conclude with a classical vocal performance by veteran singer Begum Parveen Sultana of Patiala gharana.Kalidas Samaroh is organized by MTDC in collaboration with the district administration. The entry to the festival will be free and no official invitations will be issued, informed Sanjay Kumar.The festival was revived three years back after a gap of more than five years. Previously held at Ramtek also, the festival since last year is being organized only at Nagpur and another event of tribal dance is organized at Ramtek in January. “The dates for this festival will be finalized and announced later,” the divisional commissioner added.
