Nagpur: City police chief BK Upadhyay on Thursday visited Pachpaoli police station for routine inspection. After taking over reins from K Venkatesham, Upadhyay had been visiting police stations at regular intervals.The visit of the top cop to Pachpaoli police station may have been a part of his routine scheme but it triggered a set of speculation about the purpose. The reason behind the speculation was a set of controversies into which Pachpaoli police had got mired in the last couple of weeks, including transfer of a case to crime branch, which was converted from suicide to murder.Pachpaoli police had claimed the death of Pankaj Ambhore as a suicide after which it faced a barrage of allegations. The case was shifted to crime branch which registered the case as murder within one week of investigation. There was another controversy over a raid by the crime branch on a gambling den at Buddha Nagar where Pachpaoli police had claimed to have found nothing. In yet another allegation, a cow vigilante had sent a message to the CP about Pachpaoli police’s nexus with slaughter houses.Though Upadhyay distanced himself from the controversies, several sources in the department felt the top cop’s visit was connected to the relentless complaints he had been getting against Pachpaoli police.Upadhyay said he had been regularly visiting police stations to ensure the pro-citizen policing and to lay more emphasis on politeness of cops with complainants. “My visit was related to general improvement in the polices’ demeanour with citizens and friendlier approach,” he said.
