Jump of over 5,000 degrees, PhDs go up by 380

Even the number of PhDs has increased by 380 as compared to those awarded at the last event. TOI had reported this on Tuesday.However, postgraduate degrees dropped by 5,106 while there was steep increase of 10,476 in undergraduate degrees. Nagpur: The 106th convocation of Nagpur University witnessed a jump of 5 ,751 degrees in comparison to 105th ceremony held on March 24 last year. On Saturday, it conferred 182 medals and prizes that included 156 gold, nine silver and 17 prizes. At he 105th convocation, NU conferred 457 prizes that included 312 gold and 43 silver medals.

Nagpur: The 106th convocation of Nagpur University witnessed a jump of 5 ,751 degrees in comparison to 105th ceremony held on March 24 last year. TOI had reported this on Tuesday.However, postgraduate degrees dropped by 5,106 while there was steep increase of 10,476 in undergraduate degrees. NU had bestowed 31,980 UG and 16,259 PG degrees last year, while on Saturday, 42,456 UG and 11,153 PG degrees were conferred.Till last few years, the arts faculty had witnessed highest number of students as the subjects were easier. However, in a sea change, science faculty got highest number of degrees, over 21,000, as compared to arts, commerce and inter-disciplinary faculties.In science faculty, the university awarded highest number of degrees — 21,746 — which is almost double than 12,749 in humanities and 12,693 in commerce and management faculties. About 3,947 degrees were awarded to students from three autonomous colleges — GH Raisoni College of Engineering, Ramdeobaba College of Engineering and Management and Yashwantrao Chavan college of Engineering.NU bestowed 11 degrees of ME (Research) course which was closed long back after TOI ran a series of reports on how that course was illegal.The least number of degrees — 3,050 — were awarded in inter-disciplinary sciences faculty. This year, NU awarded one DSc to Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT) professor A Bhole.This year, NU’s decision to significantly reduce its gold and silver medals and prizes by as many as 275 led to early completion of the ceremony. At he 105th convocation, NU conferred 457 prizes that included 312 gold and 43 silver medals. On Saturday, it conferred 182 medals and prizes that included 156 gold, nine silver and 17 prizes.
