Nagpur: In another setback for the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), the state government has decided to execute Sonegaon Lake beautification project worth Rs18.20 crore through MahaMetro.Confirming the decision, ruling party leader in NMC Sandip Joshi told TOI that the motive behind roping in MahaMetro was to begin and complete the project at the earliest.“The main motive is to develop the water body for the people. It does not matter which agency is doing the work. MahaMetro has been given the project as it requires less administrative process for beginning the work,” Joshi said.Recently, the Nagpur Bench of Bombay high court had disposed of a PIL and writ petition paving way for the project. The state approved the project in July 2017 but it could not be executed due to petitions pending in the HC.The heritage conservation committee had given NOC for the project on December 21, 2017.Under the project, the NMC has proposed to construct food court, parking, seating arena, green gym etc towards east of the lake. On the south side, the proposal is to construct a foot over bridge, pergola, toilet rooms, parking etc. Towards the west side, a pucca embankment is on the anvil.It will be the second project on the lake after the rejuvenation project worth Rs3.24 crore executed between 2012 and 2014.With this, MahaMetro has got yet another non-Metro rail project. Earlier, it got works such as Futala lake tunnel, viewers’ gallery project, beautification of railway station and its premises, central business district including Yeshwant stadium, London Street construction, development of Santra, Cotton and Netaji markets, flyovers on Wardha Road and Kamptee Road etc.
