NHAI fails to complete any city project in time

NHAI is likely to extend deadline up to December 2020.Sadar flyover project’s deadline ended in January this year. Nagpur: National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has failed to complete all five projects it is executing in city within deadline prolonging bad roads, traffic congestion and blocks for road users. As per NHAI, project’s progress is around 60%. Here Residency Road, Koradi Road and Katol Road are in bad condition for the last two years. The NHAI official said this project got delayed due to clearance from Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS).

Nagpur: National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has failed to complete all five projects it is executing in city within deadline prolonging bad roads, traffic congestion and blocks for road users. All the projects will require at least one year for completion.Pardi flyover project is most delayed one. The bhoomipuja of the project was performed in September 2014. Actual work commenced in April 2016. Deadline for completion of the project was March this year. As per NHAI data, progress on it is mere 28%.The project’s works are underway on four major roads— Bhandara national highway towards Pardi, Old Bhandara road, Central Avenue and Inner Ring Road towards Kalamna. All the roads are in bad condition with drivers having to negotiate potholes for last four years. Regular traffic jams and blocks are common on them.NHAI is not beginning concretization of these roads which would have given some relief.East Nagpur MLA Krishna Khopde told TOI, project’s completion will come as a big relief for the people. “NHAI officials and contractor are to blame for inordinate delay. Gadkari and me are pursuing them for completing the project as soon as possible,” he said.An NHAI official said project got delayed due to delay in land acquisition by the district administration and Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC). “There were also changes in designs due to Metro Rail corridor,” he said. It will take another one and a half years to complete. NHAI is likely to extend deadline up to December 2020.Sadar flyover project’s deadline ended in January this year. NHAI official said there were various hurdles, especially delay in getting permission to block roads that led to delay.The deadline for Chinchbhuvan (khapri) railway overbridge (ROB) also ended in January. It too is only 60% complete. The NHAI official said this project got delayed due to clearance from Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS). “We prepared girders as per technical approval given by Railways. CRS requires third party report of girders which is awaited. Work will be speeded up once we get green signal from CRS,” he said.Widening and concretization of Kamptee-Kanhan road was supposed to be completed by February. It is now around 80% complete. Works of railway underbridge, three minor bridges and widening of stretch before Kamptee are pending. The road carries heavy traffic. Thousands are facing serious inconvenience due to delay in its completion.The project of widening existing 21km stretch of Outer Ring Road between Amravati road and Wardha road and construction of new 61.53km road from Amravati road to Katol road to Koradi road to Kamptee road followed by concretization is only 46% complete with deadline of completion in June. It is likely to take over one year for completion which means continuation of traffic jam and regular blocks. It is also hit by inferior quality of works.
