Illegal religious shrines: NMC gets 114 objections

Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has received 114 suggestions/objections on notification related to illegal religious structures. As per the notification, 1,007 structures are proposed to be regularized, while 198 have been listed for demolition.The civic body had issued the notification for 1,205 illegal religious structures in January. The structures are situated on two sides of the staircase leading into the water body.The NMC and NIT had demolished over 750 illegal religious structures last year. Suggestions/objections were invited on the list.The NMC has received 41 suggestions/objections on the structures placed in category A and 66 on category B. As many 1,007 structures were placed in category A for regularization and 198 in category B for demolition.

As per the notification, 1,007 structures are proposed to be regularized, while 198 have been listed for demolition.The civic body had issued the notification for 1,205 illegal religious structures in January. As many 1,007 structures were placed in category A for regularization and 198 in category B for demolition. Suggestions/objections were invited on the list.The NMC has received 41 suggestions/objections on the structures placed in category A and 66 on category B. Seven suggestions/objections were not related to structures in two categories.Now, the city-level committee headed by municipal commissioner Abhijit Bangar will hold a meeting and decide the schedule for hearing the suggestions/objections. As per the orders of the Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court, the committee has to finalize the structures of categories A and B. Also, the committee has to select structures proposed for demolition but can be rehabilitated to other locations for category C.The structures listed in category A had cropped up on public utility (PU) land and open spaces without permission. The NMC’s general body had passed a resolution to regularize structures on PU lands and open spaces. The resolution is pending with the state government for final approval.As per the NMC, the structures in category B are on roads and obstructing traffic. However, a few structures in this category are not on the roads.Best examples are Hanuman and Ganesh temples situated on the banks of Sonegaon lake. The shrines are not on the roads and situated at such a location where the road can never be widened. The structures are situated on two sides of the staircase leading into the water body.The NMC and NIT had demolished over 750 illegal religious structures last year. However, the drive drew devotees’ ire.In September last year, the HC had directed the NMC to demolish structures on the roads and footpaths. The HC also asked the civic body to conduct a fresh survey and prepare a list structures in two categories.
