NET qualifiers to launch hunger strike from August 6

"There are 1,171 colleges in Maharashtra for which 34,531 posts of assistant professors have already sanctioned. More than 11,500 posts are vacant and with senior professors retiring, more are on the verge of getting vacant.

NASHIK: Candidates who have qualified in the National Eligibility Test (NET) and State Eligibilty Test (SET) are set to launch a state-wide indefinite hunger strike in the first week of August to protest against the ban on recruitment of full-time assistant professors in colleges across the state.A delegation of the NET/SET and PhD holders submitted a memorandum of their demands to director of higher education Dhanraj Mane in Pune on July 27. They requested that the ban on recruitment of assistant professors be revoked."There are 1,171 colleges in Maharashtra for which 34,531 posts of assistant professors have already sanctioned. More than 11,500 posts are vacant and with senior professors retiring, more are on the verge of getting vacant. The state government should start the recruitment as early as possible as many candidates who have qualified NET/SET and PhD holders are unemployed due to this policy," said Vijayak Mane, who participated in the delegation from Nashik During a hunger strike in front of the director of higher education office, Pune in June this year, director Mane had assured that he would convey the demands of the NET/SET candidates to the state government."We came to know nothing positive has turned out even after a month of our agitation. Hence, we have decided to start an indefinite hunger strike from August 6 ," said Vijayak.On the other hand, Maharashtra Federation of University and College Teachers' Organizations (MFUCTO) has also thrown its weight behind the stir called by NET/SET candidates. "The MFUCTO has been demanding for long to start the recruitment of full-time assistant professors. The state government has put a ban on the recruitment since many years at a time when the UGC has already stipulated that the colleges must have full-time faculties. More than 40% posts of assistant professors are vacant in state collges," said MFUCTO secretary S P Lawande.
