Civic chief draws flak for cancelling road works

The administration will have to prepare the estimate for the road works. “Everyone talks about road works but no one talks about the funds. We have to see that we do not disturb our fiscal discipline while doing these works. Talking about the gaping potholes, the corporators said that the roads need to be developed on a priority basis.The corporators were mostly irked with the cancellation of Rs 275-crore road work by civic chief Tukaram Mundhe.Corporator Mushir Sayyed said that since 10-12 years, no road construction work had been undertaken in his ward. They want to know why the work of their wards is not getting done.

Nashik: The NMC corporators, cutting across party lines, kicked up a storm in the general body meeting on Wednesday accusing the civic administration, especially the municipal commissioner, of allocating meagre funds for road construction works.Most corporators of New Nashik (Cidco) and Nashik Road complained that their wards had been excluded from the road developemnt projects. Talking about the gaping potholes, the corporators said that the roads need to be developed on a priority basis.The corporators were mostly irked with the cancellation of Rs 275-crore road work by civic chief Tukaram Mundhe.Corporator Mushir Sayyed said that since 10-12 years, no road construction work had been undertaken in his ward. Shahu Khaire said that in Old Nashik, the road had caved in and that he would repair it from his own expenses.Corporator Dilip Datir said that the mayor had the authority over the meeting and that Mundhe did not let anyone speak. All the corporators, who were up in arms against Mundhe, quitened when Ajay Boraste spoke.“Today, the members are expressing anguish about their role in NMC. They want to know why the work of their wards is not getting done. When we leave this meeting hall, we have to answer people. I have said earlier that the commissioner should increase his communication with corporators,” said Boraste.Mundhe said only those projects were being done which were included in the budget. “Everyone talks about road works but no one talks about the funds. We have to see that we do not disturb our fiscal discipline while doing these works. The land acquisition for roads that were constructed 25 years ago is yet to be done. We have to do justice to the land owners,” said Mundhe.Mayor Ranjana Bhansi said, “Barring the roads that were done during Simhastha Kumbh Mela, all colony roads will be done. The administration will have to prepare the estimate for the road works. It does not matter even if there is a spill over in the budget.”She further said, “I will visit all the wards and see for myself. We will take the commissioner around every nook and corner of the city,” said Bhansi.
