Nashik: The district will soon achieve another feat in the world of sports when it hosts the first half triathlon event, scheduled on January 27. The event will have 2km swimming, 90km cycling and 21km of running.The event, branded Unravel Nashik Triathlon, has been conceptualised by city commissioner of police Ravinder Singal.“Since Nashik has good runners and sports lovers, we wondered why it should not have a major event to attract tourists through sports. So, we have decided to organise a half triathlon to begin with so that we nurture the habit and interest for this demanding event,” said Singal, who won the Iron Man title in France in August.He was speaking at a programme organised to launch a website dedicated to tourism sector of the district.The Nashik Police, urban and rural, and the district administration have joined hands for organising the half triathlon.“The event will bring tourists from across the world. It will also contribute to the health of Nashikites,” Singal said.The commissioner also drew out plans for a duathlon event that will have combination of two events – running and cycling, cycling and swimming, or swimming and running. “The plans were being considered to enable participation of people from Nashik. The combination of two events would naturally bring in more participation,” he said.Singal said that in Kolhapur the triathlon event is conducted by the local people whereas in Nashik all the government agencies would join hands to make the event successful. All the events will be conducted in Gangapur dam area, he added.The online registration for the competition will begin on October 20.
