Youth suspected of wife’s murder attempts suicide

NASHIK: A 23-year-old man nabbed by Gangapur police for the alleged murder of his 20-year-old wife consumed poison before he was taken into custody, senior police officers said, adding that he was under treatment at Nasihk civil hospital.Jayesh Ramchandra Damodar, resident of Panchavati, is suspected to have choked his wife Payala Pardeshi to death on the terrace of a building along College Road either late night on Tuesday or early Wednesday. The woman’s body was discovered on the terrace on Wednesday.Police had been hunting for the husband of the woman and got a tip-off on Friday that he was near the Rajiv Gandhi Bhavan of Nashik Municipal Corporation . “When we reached, he had already consumed rat poison. We found the wrapper of the poison in his pocket and rushed him to hospital,” a police officer said.Gangapur police had been on the lookout for the young man as his mother-in-law, Sarla Pardeshi, had said that she suspected him. Teams had been searching for him since Wednesday.Police said on the morning of Wednesday, Jayesh was calling up friends to find out whether police had reached the Satyam Leela Building, a commercial complex where he had allegedly strangled his wife to death. A man had walked on to the terrace of the building on Wednesday and informed police of the corpse.Payal worked in a garment shop in College Road and would return home around 9.30 pm daily, after the shop closed. On Tuesday, however, she did not return and her parents began to look for her. A post-mortem examination revealed she had been choked to death.The victim’s mother Sarla Pardeshi stated in her complaint that Payal had married Jayesh a few years back. However, he used to beat her up and starve her. Payal had left him and returned to her parents about six months ago.Frustrated, Jayesh murdered her and attempted to make a quick exit from the city. Police, however, caught up with him on Friday.
