Nashik: The number accidental deaths caused due to electrocution, as vitims come in contact with live wires, is on the rise in Nashik zone of the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL).As per official data, 23 deaths were caused in the Nashik zone from April-Dec 2018 as the victims came in contact with the live wires, as compared to 18 such incidents registered between April 2017 and March 2018.“The deaths due to accidental contacts with live wires is a very serious issues as the power distribution company harly has any control over it. However, if any such incident occurs, the company is held responsible on one or the other ground,” a senior MSEDCL official said.The official also pointed out that most of such cases include masons working on a construction site. “This generally happens because the construction is illegal or uanauthorised, else safe distance is always maintained before allowing any construction,” he said.Other major resons for such accidents, said the official, are that people generally use metal objects to fix TV antenas, remove entangled kite or attempt to tap power for illegal purpose from the main lines. “Besides the fatalities, leakage of current has also increased.”“This is a serious matter related to handling electrical units and equipments. The consumers should use standard equipments with the services rendered by authorised contractors instead of attempting to self-do the installations.
