Environmentalist seeks human status for Godavari

Nashik: Environmentalist Devang Jani has decided to ask for human status to the Godavari along with demanding the revival of 17 ancient kunds.Earlier, Jani had filed a PIL in the high court for reviving 17 ancient kunds and natural springs in the river by removing the concretisation. "As per the high court's order, I had given a presentation to the municipal corporation about 17 kunds in the Godavari river and natural springs, which were covered due to concretisation. Plus, it has only mentioned about the works carried out during the Kumbh Mela and not any other major issues," Jani said.He added, "The central government has already announced human status to two rivers, Ganga and Yamuna .

He was asked to give a presentation to the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) regarding the same. But, the civic body has not taken any measures to revive the kunds and natural or removed the concretisation on the river.So, the environmentalist has decided to file a request petition to remove the concretisation and revive the ancient kunds while pitching for a give human status to the Godavari river."As per the high court's order, I had given a presentation to the municipal corporation about 17 kunds in the Godavari river and natural springs, which were covered due to concretisation. In its reply, the civic body has mentioned about the concretisation in the river bank and not the riverbed. Plus, it has only mentioned about the works carried out during the Kumbh Mela and not any other major issues," Jani said.He added, "The central government has already announced human status to two rivers, Ganga and Yamuna . So, we also want the government to give human status to the Godavari river. If the river is human, then covering the kunds and natural springs through concretisation is murder of the river."
