TCS opens sprawling Thane facility to house 30,000 employees

THANE: Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) opened a sprawling facility in Thane on Wednesday which will seat 30,000 employees, an ambitious exercise aimed at consolidating its operations across the Mumbai region under one roof.The new facility named Olympus Centre was inaugurated by chief minister Devendra Fadnavis. The stateof-the-art facility includes a training block, club house and gymnasium, thus providing a contemporary and holistic work culture," said Rajesh Gopinathan. Chandrasekaran said ease of doing business in Mumbai and Maharashtra is very high and the group is committed to the state. Since TCS functions from several offices in the city, some of them being rented properties, it was decided to bring a chunk of the operations under one roof, said officials.

THANE: Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) opened a sprawling facility in Thane on Wednesday which will seat 30,000 employees, an ambitious exercise aimed at consolidating its operations across the Mumbai region under one roof.The new facility named Olympus Centre was inaugurated by chief minister Devendra Fadnavis. Since TCS functions from several offices in the city, some of them being rented properties, it was decided to bring a chunk of the operations under one roof, said officials. With TCS's total employee strength at 387,000, the facility could house up to 8% of the workforce.TCS CEO Rajesh Gopinathan said consolidating operations at the new campus would also create indirect employment opportunities in the Greater Mumbai area. "The TCS Olympus Centre will be developed in two phases and has the potential to accommodate 30,000 employees, once fully operational. The stateof-the-art facility includes a training block, club house and gymnasium, thus providing a contemporary and holistic work culture," said Rajesh Gopinathan. TCS employs around 75,000 in Maharashtra across Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur and Nashik.Located inside Hiranandani Estate off Ghodbunder Road, the facility would rank among the biggest IT campuses in the Mumbai metropolitan region, and is in keeping with the broad trend in the infotech sector to centralize operations. Infosys, Wipro, Cognizant have all built hubs across cities on a similar or larger scale.Of India's 4-million workforce in the IT-BPO space, Mumbai accounts for 3 lakh. Speaking at the inauguration, Fadnavis urged Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran and other TCS heads to help create "an ecosystem for startups that could soon mean big business for the state."The state, he said, was ready to support by providing increased FSI. He pointed out that approvals for the TCS project were issued within two months while the entire facility was constructed within 18 months.TCS Olympus is being be developed in two phases; 16,000-17,000 employees have already moved into the new facility and it will commence exports from the Centre from this month onwards. Chandrasekaran said ease of doing business in Mumbai and Maharashtra is very high and the group is committed to the state. "We'll continue to make significant investments...we'll not only grow our existing businesses, but also invest in a number of businesses in the latest technologies."
