Narrow escape for visitors as false ceiling collapses at Wave Mall

NOIDA: A false ceiling on the sixth floor of Wave Mall in Noida’s Sector 18 collapsed on Thursday evening, minutes before the start of a movie show in one of the screens on the same floor. The incident took place because of heavy rain. A Wave spokesperson blamed the collapse on heavy rain.Witnesses said the ceiling came crashing down at 7.45pm. The visitors, alarmed by a sudden shower of glass shards and plaster, tried to rush out of the building. We ran out of the mall to save ourselves,” Mishra, a resident of Noida’s Sector 108, said.

Though scores of visitors were present, no one was seriously injured.At least three outlets, including a spa, a photo-frame shop and a nail art centre, were heavily damaged. A Wave spokesperson blamed the collapse on heavy rain.Witnesses said the ceiling came crashing down at 7.45pm. The visitors, alarmed by a sudden shower of glass shards and plaster, tried to rush out of the building. A woman suffered injuries on her foot in the melee, an employee of a shop told TOI.“The portion that collapsed was a false ceiling made of plaster of Paris. The incident took place because of heavy rain. We regret the mishap, but would like to assure all that nobody was hurt,” a Wave spokesperson said.A worker, who was clearing the remnants of the balustrade that fell off, said, "We narrowly escaped injuries. I was upstairs when the incident took place.” Many workers were seen removing the pieces of plaster and glass as late as 10pm.The owner of one of the stores which suffered major damages said that his employees were lucky to have survived the mishap. “We are yet calculate the monetary loss. My laptops and printers are all damaged,” he said.Lalit Mishra, who was at the mall with his wife and two children at the time of the incident, said, “We were on an escalator to catch a movie on the sixth floor when we suddenly saw pieces of glass and plaster raining down. It looked like a cloudburst. We ran out of the mall to save ourselves,” Mishra, a resident of Noida’s Sector 108, said.
