Athlete breaks ankle at ‘daring event’, accuses organiser of negligence

She found that her left ankle was badly swollen and she was administered a spray. Now, she is able to walk with special shoes.The complainant fears she may not be able to run again because of the injury. Her family said they had to cancel a trip to Bangkok because of the injury. The athlete walked with a crutch for a few months.

NOIDA: A Delhi-based former air hostess and now an athlete has lodged a police complaint against the organiser of a “daring competition” in Noida where she broke her ankle and was left confined to the bed for six monthsAnjana Bora Jain, a resident of Aurobindo Marg in Delhi, said she had visited three hospitals over the past six months but her injury was not cured fully. She has accused the event organiser of criminal negligence and non-compliance of safety standards.Jain said she had taken part in the competition in March but the organiser had not informed the participants about any obstacles or hazards.In one of the acts, participants were required to jump from a height of 7 feet into waist-deep water. She claimed she had objected to the jumping, but was apparently told she would be declared disqualified otherwise.Jain jumped into the water and her left heel hit the floor of the pool with force, causing excruciating pain. She found that her left ankle was badly swollen and she was administered a spray. Later, she was rushed to Jaypee Hospital in Noida. A diagnosis revealed she had suffered a calcaneal fracture in the left ankle and a surgery was advised to her.The broken ankle left Jain bed-ridden for the past few months. Her family said they had to cancel a trip to Bangkok because of the injury. Jain is now undergoing treatment at Safdarjung Hospital, Delhi. The athlete walked with a crutch for a few months. Now, she is able to walk with special shoes.The complainant fears she may not be able to run again because of the injury. She also alleged the police had initially refused to register her complaint, but relented when the SSP intervened.The event organiser has told police the participants had given a written undertaking that they would be responsible for injury suffered during the event.Ajay Pal Sharma, SSP Gautam Budh Nagar, said a case has been registered against the event organiser under Section 338 (causing grievous hurt by act of endangering life or personal safety of others) at Sector 39 police station. “We will inquire the matter and take necessary action,” he said.
