GHAZIABAD: A local resident has approached the National Green Tribunal ( NGT ) after GMC allegedly started work to convert a “park” in Vaishali’s Sector 4 into a vending zone. In a hearing on Tuesday, the green panel ordered that a committee of officials from GDA, GMC, district administration and Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) be formed to look into the matter and decide on the matter within a month. All work in the park area has been suspended for now.The NGT order said, “‘We direct that a joint committee...be constituted and may hold a meeting within one month to take stock of the situation and to decide further course of action in accordance with the law.’” It further said, “GDA will be the nodal agency and will be accountable for compliance of the order of this tribunal.”In his petition, Vaishali resident Somnath Das had alleged that the conversion of the “park” into a vending zone will reduce green cover in the area, and in turn, add to pollution. A portion of the plot is used by residents as a dumping ground, which the complainant also mentioned in his petition.Speaking on the issue, a GMC official said that the area in question is government land and is not designated for a park. “Since the area had been lying vacant for some period, residents used it to hold functions during the festive season.
