TV executive fights off snatchers but can’t reach police on 100

NOIDA: A television channel executive walking home after withdrawing money from an ATM was allegedly attacked by two men, who came in a car and tried to snatch his gold chain after pointing a gun to his forehead.Pushpal Singh, however, fought off the attacker who had whipped out the gun and pressed the button which allowed the magazine to fall off. Though the assailants fled in the car, Singh’s ordeal did not end there. Repeated calls to the police response team on 100 failed to connect. He then called up a friend, who, in turn, informed the SSP.The alleged attack took place near Hyde Park society in Sector 78.Singh said he had reached near the society around 8.30pm on Wednesday when he realised that a grey Hyudai i10 had been following him for some time. “When I had walked about 20 metres ahead of Hyde Park, the car intercepted me. A man walked towards me and sought to know the direction towards Sector 56. As I told him the directions, he did not seem interested at all. He was instead looking here and there, as if to check for any passerby. He and the other man inside the car seemed to be in their 30s,” Singh said.He said the man then whipped out a country-made pistol from his pocket and caught hold his collar in a bid to snatch the chain. Unsuccessful, the attacker placed the pistol at Singh’s chest and tried snatching the chain again. However, Singh caught hold of the pistol, whose magazine fell off in the tussle. “No sooner did I pick up the magazine, he rushed into the car. Both of them sped away,” the journalist said.Singh’s ordeal was far from over. He tried dialing 100 but could not get through. “I tried the number at least 20 times. I then called up the Sector 49 SHO, but could not reach her too. I finally called up a friend, who informed the SSP. I then walked home, took my car and drove to the Sector 49 police station,” Singh said.Anita Chauhan, the SHO of Sector 49 police station, said an FIR had been lodged under Section 393 of the IPC (attempt to commit robbery). “The car can be seen in only one CCTV camera, but the number is unclear. We are trying to identify the car,” she said.
