NOIDA: Ilegal parking of SUVs and luxury cars, a regular phenomenon in Sector 18 market, will end in the near future if the traffic police has its way. It has asked the Noida Authority to direct DLF, the concessionaire handling the parking in Sector 18, to use bigger cranes to tow away SUVs. Currently, only smaller vehicles like WagonR, Alto etc are towed away as no big cranes are available. The traffic police, which has only six cranes for towing away vehicles across Noida, has also sought two big cranes for its own use.According to traffic police, less than 100 vehicles get towed away in a day from the market on an average. SP (traffic) Anil Jha said while the smaller cars had stopped parking illegally, luxury cars and SUVs continue to park in the sector.“It is mostly only cars like WagonR, Alto, etc, which get towed away. However, others like the BMW Creta , Verna, etc don’t face any action because the cranes being operated cannot carry them,” he said.Snce the vehicle owners were aware that the crane wouldn’tbe able to carry the car, they try to negotiate or get away by the time the crane arrives, he said. The charges for towing away a vehicle in Sector 18 are recovered from commuters, unlike in other places. If one parks his car in a no-parking zone in Sector 18, one has to pay Rs 900 as fine. This fine includes Rs 500 which is the penalty levied by the traffic police and Rs 400 which goes to the Noida Authority.Last week, the traffic police wrote to the Noida traffic cell seeking directions for the DLF group, which handles the parking of the sector, to deploy bigger cranes which are capable of carrying such cars.On Monday, they also wrote to the traffic cell requesting for at least two big cranes for its own use.In Greater Noida, no towing takes place as the traffic police has no cranes with them. In case of any event being held at the Expo Mart, the police has to borrow cranes from the organisers for towing.Further, the traffic police has asked the Authority to widen the Sector 71 intersection to accommodate more vehicles. Dev Baisoya, head, operations, DLF told TOI that they will evaluate the proposal from the traffic police.
