Tackle rising cases of chain snatching, IG tells officers

NOIDA: Concerned over growing incidents of chain snatching and loot across the city, IG (Meerut) on Tuesday held a meeting with the SSP, SP (city), SP (rural) and all SHOs of Noida city area. The officers noted that as many as six incidents of loot had taken place in areas like sectors 39, 58, etc. Afsar, Gaurav and Ashutosh, who are in their mid-20s, had booked the truck from a transport company in Sahibabad area under the pretext of ferrying goods. The men had allegedly drugged the driver, Sandeep, with a soft drink laced with sedatives and dumped him near Lal Quan before fleeing with the vehicle. The truck, bearing a Haryana registration number, has also been recovered from the accused.

The meeting came a day after a similar session was held in Ghaziabad where growing incidents of crime were discussed with the SSP and other senior police officers.On Tuesday, IG (Meerut) Ram Kumar met Gautam Budh Nagar SSP Ajay Pal Sharma, SP (city) Sudha Singh, SP (rural) Vineet Jaiswal and SHOs of Sector 39, 58, 20 police stations areas in the SSP office in Sector 14 A and discussed the growing incidents of chain snatching and loots. The officers noted that as many as six incidents of loot had taken place in areas like sectors 39, 58, etc. over the past week itself. The officers said there might have been similar incidents in Greater Noida too as well.Over the past few days, multiple incidents of loot and snatchings by bike-borne assailants have been reported in Noida and Greater Noida.On November 6, a teacher working with DPS in Sector 30 was robbed at gunpoint near Nithari police station around 1pm. On November 2, an engineer working in the Noida-based office of an MNC was allegedly robbed by four assailants who offered him a lift in their car to Delhi.The engineer Saurabh Kumar’s gold chain, ring and some cash were looted by the assailants who drove him towards Greater Noida rather than Delhi, where he stays in Jagdamba Colony.On November 9, a Jal Nigam official dialled 100 and complained to police that he had been robbed of his belongings near Sector 37. But the cops were unable to trace the victim later.SSP Sharma told TOI that the IG (Meerut) had directed senior officers to sensitise their subordinates over growing incidents of snatchings and loot.“We had held a meeting of the police response vehicles (PRVs) and PCRs where they were issued instructions for maintaining proactivity in the field,” Sharma said.The IG also said that a joint operation by the Noida and Ghaziabad police would be conducted to regulate crime in Khoda, which is on the Noida border. He also directed the officers to watch out for entry of criminals from Delhi border be also watched for.Three men were arrested late on Monday night for allegedly snatching a mini-truck from its driver on November 10. The truck, bearing a Haryana registration number, has also been recovered from the accused. Afsar, Gaurav and Ashutosh, who are in their mid-20s, had booked the truck from a transport company in Sahibabad area under the pretext of ferrying goods.
